LightBridge Hospice Recognized as a State Leader in Veteran Care

LightBridge is the first hospice in San Diego County to meet stringent “We Honor Vets” Level II requirements in improving the care and support of Veterans.

The program, founded by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and Veterans Affairs, is designed to empower hospice professionals to meet the unique needs of dying Veterans.

“Because San Diego has such a large military presence, we have many Veterans in need of hospice care with distinct psychosocial and medical concerns that can become challenging toward the end of life,” said Jill Mendlen, founder and president of LightBridge Hospice. “By identifying the unique needs of every era of veteran, LightBridge is able to guide patients and their families through their end of life journey.”

To meet the “We Honor Vets” requirements, LightBridge staff and volunteers attend veteran-specific training and have created a culture focused on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgement. In addition, the hospice conducts ongoing community outreach with the VA San Diego Healthcare System, Veterans Home of California-Chula Vista and Veterans Village of San Diego.
